THE
THEME OF SUFFERING: 1 PETER
by
1.
VS
1:6 Trials last only for “a
little while”
2.
VS
1:6 Trials are “necessary” for
the proving of our faith (which is very important to God)
3.
VS
1:6 Their trials were “manifold”
(as ours often are)
4.
VS
1:7 The proof of our faith is
more precious than gold which is perishable
5.
VS
1:7 Our purified faith will
result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Christ
6.
VS
2:13-15 Submission to the authorities
placed over our lives will limit unnecessary suffering
7.
VS
2:19 If you must suffer at the
hands of non-believers, be sure you are suffering unjustly
8.
VS
2:19 If you are suffering because
of following your God-given conscience, then your suffering will be pleasing to
God (your suffering for God must not please Him then if your conscience is
being offended because of sin in your life)
9.
VS
2:20 Our suffering will gain
credit for us before God if we have suffered as a result of doing what is right
10. VS 2:20 Our suffering will gain credit for us
before God if we patiently endure suffering
11. VS 2:21 You are called to suffering by God
12. VS 2:21 Christ first suffered for each of us
13. VS 2:21 In His suffering, He left us an example
to follow
14. VS 2:22 Though He suffered He committed no sin
15. VS 2:22 In His suffering, He never deceived anyone or bore false
witness
16. VS 2:23 When He was reviled, He did not revile
in return
17. VS 2:23 When suffering, He didn’t threaten
anyone, though if anyone could have, it was Him
18. VS 2:23 In His suffering, He entrusted His life
to God
19. VS 2:25 He bore our sins on the cross that we
might die to sin and live to righteousness
20. VS 2:25 Because of the suffering of Christ’s
wounds we are healed from our sin
21. VS 3:13 No one can really harm us (God will
work all things to good- Rom. 8:28)
22. VS 3:14 If someone will harm us because we are
a Christian and walking righteously, we will be blessed
23. VS 3:14 Because of these promises Peter exhorts
not to fear a persecutor’s intimidation, nor be troubled
24. VS 3:17 It is better to suffer for doing what
is right than for doing what is wrong (sinning)
25. VS 3:18 Christ died for us, the just for the
unjust (So how could we complain when unjustly suffering?)
26. VS 4:1-2 The Christian is to arm himself for “the
purpose of suffering”, since Christ also suffered in the flesh
27. VS 4:1-2 Suffering rightly embraced causes a
Christian to die to self and to sin
28. VS 4:5 We can be encouraged in that those
who malign us will one day give account to the Lord for their actions
29. VS 4:12 We Christians must not be surprised
when we find ourselves in a ‘fiery trial’ as though some strange thing were
happening to us (plan on getting them)
30. VS 4:13 To suffer persecution because we are a
Christian is to share in the sufferings of Christ
31. VS 4:13 To the degree that we share the
sufferings of Christ, we must keep on rejoicing so that also at the revelation
of His glory, we may rejoice with exultation
32. VS 4:14 If we are reviled for the name of
Christ, we are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon us
33. VS 4:15 If we do have to suffer as a Christian,
we must be sure that we are not experiencing this suffering because we have
committed a murder, or theft, or that we are an evildoer or a troublesome
meddler
34. VS 4:16 If we must suffer for being a
Christian, we must not feel ashamed, but in that name glorify God
35. VS 4:17 It is time for judgment to begin with
the household of God (therefore He will surely use suffering in order to purify
the faith of His people)
36. VS 4:19 If we Christians have to suffer
according to the will of God, we must entrust our souls to a faithful Creator
in doing what is right in our lives (He has deemed whatever we must go through
to be necessary for us)
37. VS 5:7 We are to cast all of our anxiety
upon Him for He cares for us
38. VS 5:9 We are often tempted to think that we
are the only one suffering in a certain area, however the same sufferings are
also being accomplished by our brethren
39. VS 5:10 Ever before us is the promise that He
has called us to His eternal glory in Christ
40. VS 5:10 God promises that after we have
suffered for awhile that He will perfect, confirm, strengthen, and establish us
